About Back 40
Field-first land management and hunting advice, written by a landowner who actually has to live with the results.
Back 40 exists because too much “outdoor content” is written by people who don’t own dirt, don’t hunt, and don’t have to fix the mess when advice fails. I do.
I run a small farm in Southern Indiana where food plots, habitat work, trail cameras, and equipment maintenance are part of normal life. I’m an avid hunter and I spend a lot of time thinking about what makes deer move, what makes them bed, and what makes a property better year over year.
I also own land in Idaho, and I lived in Alaska for years. Alaska has a special way of punishing fake competence. Weather, access, and timing don’t care what your “top 10 tips” say. That experience taught me to keep things simple, measurable, and repeatable.
What you’ll find here
- Food plots that actually grow, plus timing windows by region and seed type.
- Habitat work like hinge cutting and bedding cover that deer actually use.
- Trail camera strategy based on terrain and movement, not random internet rules.
- Gear that earns its keep: sprayers, spreaders, tools, and property equipment.
Editorial standards
- Content is written from firsthand experience or from methods tested on real property.
- When something changes (seed blends, timing, best practices), pages get updated.
- Affiliate links are disclosed. Recommendations are based on usefulness, not hype.
